Damn, I was so excited for Scotland to secede from the UK. That would have been all kinds of awesome, not just for them, but for the rest of the world, since a new precedent would have been set. Even Sean Connery agrees with me.
They voted and failed, though 45% of Scotland’s voters voted for independence in an election with a 85% turnout. That means that almost half of them don’t want to be part of the UK anymore. That’s serious stuff.
As always, I am pro-secession for any state, province, area, or whatever who feels they are not being represented by their government. I don’t care if we’re talking about Scotland in the UK, Quebec in Canada, Texas in the US, Tibet in China, Catalonia in Spain, or anyone else. Many of these places have politics I personally disagree with. Doesn’t matter. They should all be allowed to secede if they want to.
Human beings have the right of self-determination, or they don’t. People have a right to select their own rulers, or they don’t. I think they do. The more places that secede, the better.
When I was young and naive, I used to think that the perfect world (that will never happen) would be a one-nation planet, all seven billion people in one giant country. Then I learned how the real world works and how human beings work, and my opinion is now the exact opposite. The perfect world (that will never happen) would be thousands of tiny, independent countries, governing themselves as they see fit, none of them much bigger than any other, all engaged in trade with each other.
The more people who secede, the closer we get to that condition. I’m all for it.
