ALS is a serious disease. My uncle, the man who presided over my wedding, was killed by it. It deserves recognition.
At the same time, this ice bucket challenge crap has become ridiculous. Look at the above graph. It clearly shows that societally programmed Americans are throwing massive amounts of money at diseases that kill a relatively small amount of people, just because celebrities are telling us to do so.
As just one example, we could do far more good for the world and get far more bang for our buck if we donated to improve bed nets to prevent malaria than with this ALS stuff. But because Charlie Sheen and Will Smith aren’t talking about malaria, well, there you go.
When was the last time you saw an A-list celebrity make an impassioned plea about raising awareness or research dollars regarding heart disease?
