I’ve talked before about how people resist enhancements in science and technology out of fear of change, but eventually come to accept them. The example I gave was of women saying that “they would never” modify their baby’s eye color or propensity for alcoholism using gene technology. I also said that in 20-30 years, all women will be doing this, and it will be no big deal.
England is the first country to legalize this kind of genetic manipulation. This horrifies a lot of people, but I think it’s a good thing. People thought the first car was a scary or stupid idea too. Using extra DNA as a componet of in vitro fertilization will reduce the number of children (and adults!) afflicted with mitochondrial disease, which is linked to a whole host of other horrible health problems, including diabetes and liver disease.
Even proponents of this are saying “Don’t worry! It’s not a slippery slope!” Actually, it is, and for once, it’s a good one.
DNA manipulation. Genome therapy. Cybernetics. Robotics. Nanotech. It’s all coming. In the 21st century, for the first time in our history, we will actually have to re-define what it means to be human. It’s going to be very interesting. And exciting!
